Ayurveda, what is?
I often get asked “Ayurveda, what is?” … how do you say it? …and like… what does it have to do with Yoga??
How to say this word for the traditional medical science of India?
Syllabically it is said as ‘Ah-Yur-Vay-da.’ Ayurveda is the science of Life and living.
Ayurveda what is it? I liken Ayurveda to Traditional Chinese medicine. Except from what I have learned, it is older than TCM. So the close similarities end there, however, most traditional systems of medicine have deep roots connecting to each other. Ayurveda has correlating practices and similarities with ancient Greek medicine, which I think is sort of cool…it’s old old old medicine we got here.
What I love most about Ayurveda and Yoga, is that there is time. Plenty of time to process the changes and the struggles of change. Ayurveda doesn’t worry about the timeline. It is my timeline, my responsibility towards my continued daily treatment. The more I follow my Ayurvedic guidelines, the faster the reduction of the effects of stress is released and removed. That’s when the big guns come in, and its rejuvenate and renewal…the one we all look forward to!
Ayurveda gives you back your own power. You are your own diagnostician. You prescribe your treatment each moment. An Ayurveda therapist gives you a diagnosis, education on your dosha balance, guidance and recommendations, but you choose what route is best for you to proceed.
Traditional medicine is often a holistic way of working with the body and mind. Ayurveda doesn’t leave this model, but enhances it by being most concerned with the whole functioning body, including our energetic and mental health. Ayurveda believes that we cannot have True full health unless the body and mind are working at optimal balance, and then the inner spirit, which often struggles to be seen, heard or remembered, has the space to shine as bright as we can.
Ayurveda comes from the tradition of Vedic sciences, and is a sister to Yoga. Nothing like sisters for a good chat over a cup of tea, or glass of wine! When sisters get together for a catch up, they find a way to dig deep into the core of the problem. But failing that, they will enjoy their chat anyway.
Ayurveda believes that if we cannot find the root cause at first, we work to help uncover the basis of the problem. In a simplistic example, if you had a fall, there would be an inquiry as to your physical body. In Ayurveda we consider what was happening at the time of the fall plus a few months or years, to identify any past weakness or trauma.
Next we may inquire as to what what happening in the mind and emotions at the time, to see if there was an unsteadiness that created a problem in the balance of the body.
Often what happens is that the patient remembers something themselves, much to their big surpise! It can be a Eureka moment, where they suddenly come to see how things have come into place as they look back in their life timeline. It may only take a little nudge in the right direction before an event is remembered. And, like that old saying ‘the penny drops.’
As an Ayurveda and Yoga therapist, I have seen this so many times. The client is often stunned for a while that they forgot an event in the their past. As the client proceeds with the treatment plan, it is wonderful to watch as they find their own rhythm in their healing. Ayurveda works with all disease process and imbalances, its success of treatment is dependent on the clients consistent practice and mind support practices.
Ayurveda is steeped in various ways of working with the body, mind and emotions. The deep intention of Ayurveda and Yoga is to find inner peace and happiness, or in Ayurveda and Yoga, this means to uncover the True Self.
The other point that Ayurveda makes, is that everyone has free will. We can all choose our own timing towards healing. The methods we choose, of the various five Ayurveda offers, and how often we apply them, dictate the timing of our growth and eventual balance.
Each day in the Ayurveda and Yoga system tends to be a step by step discovery towards inner strength and wealth. We promote compassion for where we have come from and gratitude for coming this far in our life. At this point right now, we are at the cusp of more than we realise.
We are seeking to help ourselves transform. To grow towards health, light, and mental stability.
Ayurveda believes you, and only you, have the power to heal yourself. You are the driver, take that wheel and drive.
