Prana is what Yoga and Ayurveda consider the life force. Some of you may know of it and some may wear it as the beautiful Yoga gear! And like the Yoga gear, we can also call Prana, the essence of life, absolutely divine too!
Prana is the bio-energetic force that creates all things, brings life to all things and sustains all things. The sacred texts describe it as the bountiful Life force; that which pervades all things.
As I write I feel inspired to breathe in right now, this Prana, the pure essence of beauty, kindness and unconditional love.❤ Prana is the first, of the three subtle doshas, the next post shall be on these. Being first of three, it means it is the most important! Similar to our breath, which is one form of transportation for Prana, that without it, there is no life. Even a small reduction or malfunction of Prana intake creates imbalance or illness.
The etymology of Pra, means that which comes before, the onward force. The beginning of the beginning had to come from something! Didn’t it? And Prana is the upward mobile energy that enlives us. You may feel its home is in your heart, the seat of the universal heart too, or you may feel it more as energy moving in the body and mind. A warming energy of revival and excitment.
Prana is the ignition, that spark of life that expands and expands again. If you think about it, this means that Prana is momentum, it creates the movement for time. Prana is responsible for the creativity, transformation and stabilising in all we do. Any spark of creative genius(or not so genius), begins with Prana moving. Prana begins your journey into clarity and leads your decisions to not react, but respond, to pause and enjoy hard labour of a new task. Prana is that which keeps us filled with energy, joy and a yearning for right living. Remember…it is the spark in all you do. That idea is a great contemplation, because it will only bring you back to the start again. Prana and you.
The science of Yoga ensures you become accustom to working with Prana. Prana is so vital that its practice is named after it, Pranayama. The observance of Prana. As a beginner in the newest newbie sense, first you will feel it “just breathing.” Something like “Oh, Yah, I went to Yoga last night and all we did was breathing and sleeping” 😂😂 It is funny how many times I have heard that!! Any hoo…. as you grow and develop and discover Yoga, you will find things begin to change, as your body adapts and alters to enhance the absorption of Prana. You don’t feel like you look different, but gosh darn, I can assure you that you will look different! Your practices from Yoga and Ayurveda begin to feel more familiar, like old friends with your personal wellness growing. Your stresses become less stressful. Your face relaxes sooner than furrows. Your smile is brighter and it is not because got cool toothpaste. Prana, is love all around us and in you. Boom!
There is a first startling moment when you feel that there is more than just the breath while you are in your Yoga class, all ready to relax and suddenly there is that sensation. “WHAT was that!!!??? Omg I just felt something change. EEK!!” 😅 Yes, it does go a bit like that. But it is nice how it isn’t scary overwhelming. You know why? Because Prana is supporting you, not depleting you. It is not pulling energy from you but helping you sustain the energy you have and keep it in balance.
You will feel Prana….like a bolt ⚡ out of the blue there is life in the breath, and the breath brings you life, and yes, energy. Energy of gaseous exchanges, and energy of the unknown. Its exciting and kind of extraordinary because it is coming from a place of Love and openness beyond what we understand. Bringing in a force traditionally known as warm, gentle yellow. Similar to the colour of honey. Prana is this.🍯
It is easy to identify, and I feel it is similar to this:
Think of someone you love, hugging you. 🦋 Stay with that image in your mind. Breathe in and out. This is the powerful exchange of Prana, the energy of life, it is love at its most simple. But until you begin the study of Pranayama, breathing practices dedicated to each unique body type or Dosha, it may not always show up so freely. Using Yoga and Ayurveda, together we find ways for you to work with Prana suitable to your needs and imbalances.

Everyone needs to learn to breathe better. This natural phenomenon of tension, builds into stress and then not breathing correctly is next. It is a small part of the panic button in all of us. As we contract from things we do not like or want, our breath does too. After a while it become a physical pattern of holding..so the body begins to mirror the minds behaviour. Breathing correctly will help reverse body armour that has built up, but also…it pinpoints belief systems we hold onto. Yoga and Ayurveda have a whole set of tools to rebalance this body to its own natural rhythm. Come on over and try it out.
