Shirodhara, is one of Ayurveda’s most known treatments. Once you say “Oil over the head…” people say, Oh I know it! But I can safely say, until you have received a treatment of Shirodhara, you really won’t know it.
Shirodhara,
It’s wildly relaxing.
It’s an extreme sport of stress relief.
It’s the icing on the cake after an Ayurvedic massage.
It’s the coconut in a Bounty bar, The cream on a Guinness,
the light at the end of the tunnel
the M in Om.
It is the Ban of Bananas.
I know, you get it. It was getting fun there for a bit!

What is Shirodhara? Most of us have seen those images, like the one above, of oil falling from a pot onto someone’s forehead… You wont find another treatment like it.
What is Shirodhara for? To balance the doshas of the mind, and in turn this balances our whole self. Content mind, is a content life.
As well as that, Ayurveda is always seeking to keep the Vata dosha balanced. (Listen to my podcast to learn more about Ayurveda and Yoga click here) Ayurveda, this traditional science of India, found that if you use a warmed viscous oil over the third eye point, Vata reduces quite quickly.
This helps all the doshas relax and have time to come into complete stillness – and heal.
The oil is moved slowly over the forehead in a simple sequence. The mind begins to relax and release the toxins of stress – and slowly it brings us into our own space – between conscious and subconscious – this is the space of Bliss, of silent body, silent mind, timelessness.
Okay so…you get the idea? It’s pretty fab. Here are some other tiny details:
Shirodhara technically means: Shiro= head and Dhara= stream…like Dharana means one single focused stream of thought; which in English means meditation. Here we use the warm oil to facilitate the activity of the mind to reduce by soothing the Hypothalamus.
When you find a way to soothe your hypothalamus, you are on a winning streak! Sort of like the potion Harry Potter won that could help him find a way for everything to fall into place.
Our hypothalamus is the director of our body’s organisation mainly hormones and when they fall into place, they are balanced…so are we.
That is why Ayurveda and Yoga recommend meditation so much, because of the effect it has on the hypothalamus…soothing! This is a treatment for stress relief, to increase mind focus, to help with sleep imbalance and hormonal dysfunction. To be fair, it soothes the headquarters of our nervous system…it a great treatment.
This warmed herbal infused Ayurvedic oil is also called ‘medicated oil’ but it’s the same thing. It is oil that is specific to the treatment and to the Dosha balance of the patient.
This treatment takes about 60 minutes in total – it begins with a small assessment and then a shoulder, neck and head massage. Shirodhara itself lasts between 15 to 30 minutes.
It is one of those things, you need to try it to understand its benefits, its value, and its place in your health.
