Social media and Yoga? To me it feels like a true paradox.
Like rushing to a Yoga class to practice slowing down. 😂
I feel the challenge for this modern world is to be prepared to be Silent. To see yourself in quiet repose. To try to resist the need to answer that phone call, to respond to that text. When did our communication become so urgent? Do Social media and Yoga blend?
Have we all been silent for so long, from fear, repression, violence, manipulation, domination and abuse that now there is this great urge to speak up and have anyone look and listen?
Ayurveda and Yoga have a new medium to be witnessed, and this is where social media and Yoga comes in.
For centuries this science of Yoga, the medicine of the mind and heart, seeking refinement of the five senses, development of the clear mind and purity of our heart, it was only taught from word of mouth. Single teacher to eager pupil. Over the years it expanded, and the modern world changed the teachers accessibility again, to include more students, more seeking to find or learn of truthfulness in their life.
The computer age has brought us to the newest phenomena;
Reaching multitudes in moments, and many of us letting others choose to listen, or not. Let us all be careful how we nourish ourselves, most importantly through thought and information. What will your mind be dining on today?
I try to remind myself I need to make some space in my mind every day. It gets pretty crowded up in there.
Using mindfulness and Yoga as tools to make space. We can develop, grow and encourage discernment as to what we need. Learn what is good for us, what makes us feel warm inside. Now more than ever I think society needs this clarity of choice and response, Social media and Yoga can help each other.
Before you go on to your social media today, pause, and see what it is you really need, what are you seeking by reaching out towards someone else behind a screen?
Perhaps we should all turn our thoughts and eyes inwards, reconnect and learn a bit more about who is behind our own camera first.
Social media and Yoga? It’s not a competition, it’s just a new way forward for all of us.
Exhale, and smile, honestly some of those pics can be hilarious, and best of all laughter, at least in my classes, is a big part of Yoga. Our inner joy just jumping out to share with others!
Go gently please,
Kelly Marie
