Teen Yoga in schools… is always a success!
Teen Yoga in schools is one of the best ways to introduce various types of stress reduction techniques and meditation into large groups.
Kelly Marie works in secondary and primary schools in Tipperary, Limerick and Galway. Kelly Marie has been teaching primary and secondary schools for 15 years, having trained with YogaKids and Mindfuls Schools contact Kelly Marie at 086 1778369
Teens thrive on the multiple relaxation techniques offered, as they discover techniques they like and love and some just didnt suit them.
When I start teaching teenagers in schools, I give them the sponge analogy;
…if the sponge is already soaked, it cant take any more. But squeeze it out and it is ready to be filled again. Our brain needs this squeezing done with relaxation, removing the unnecessary, and leaving plenty of space for new information and critical study techniques.
Yoga also has the benefit of re calibrating their habitual breathing and posture patterns, which in turn helps them recognise they are doing all the work, I am just a guide.
In my experience both Male and Female teenagers take on the experience of Yoga with a light heart.
Many come to my classes quite skeptical and a little wary,
a lot of students bring a touch of experimentation into unknown territory,
the majority have a true curiosity to just what can Yoga do for them personally, if anything at all.
Yoga for teens holds tremendous value for the development of personal Self inquiry through the physical and mental investigation of the Yoga components.
Teen Yoga in schools is easily adapted to class format:
-Kelly Marie uses Yoga physical practices to redirect the mind from school work to singular focused attention.
-Kelly Marie brings her own Yoga mats for the students, if the school cannot provide them. There are many spaces to bring Yoga into a school, it is even viable in a classroom if a hall is not available.
-Skills for correct breathing is an integral part of Yoga and a large part of stress management and relaxation therapy.
-Yoga Nidra is a form of concentration and focus to restore and re-balance the mind and body.
-Once the teens have adapted to the novelty of Yoga, we develop relaxation skills and mind focus to affirm the power of the mind and to learn the basics of mindfulness.
Science shows that meditation enhances our sleep, and helps to re-balance sleep patterns including insomnia and anxiety that disturbs sleep. And most importantly mindfulness and focus create the optimal mental environment for memory and comprehension as these skills allow stress, tension and anxiety to exit the mind anytime we are aware of their presence.
This is just one area that Teen Yoga in schools can help teens under exam year stress. Tools for stress relief that will be support for any other stress, tension or anxiety they may come across in the future.
Yoga is not a panacea for all ills. Yoga for teens is a way for teens to explore the options available to help deal with stressful situations.
I remind all my students of every age, that Yoga cannot take away the experiences that come towards us. But Yoga certainly if practices a few times a week, does help us to be less fearful of stress.
Yoga can give us a better view and understanding of what stress is, how it is created and why it can be made worse.
And opposite to that, exactly how stress relief and stress management skills are also valuable tools for Life.
